Apple software lets down Apple hardware - again

I recently updated my 3rd Gen iPod Touch to the new iOS 4 operating system ... and my battery life immediately dropped off a cliff. From recharging when the player was updating the podcasts about twice a week, I suddently found that I'd be charging it every other day.

The change was so sudden that it had to be the OS change, rather than the gradual tailing off you'd expect from rechargeable batteries.

So ... it turns out that in the new OS (a) Wifi is permanently on (which I think was the default in the previous version) but more importantly (b) a bug (not admitted by Apple of course) means that the WiFi is a huge drain on resources, leading to the problem with battery life.

The solution - put your Touch into Airplane Mode, via Settings, when you're not actually using the WiFi. Which is great when you're using a Touch ... but if you're using an iPhone, Airplane Mode has the minor disadvantage that it turns off the 3G ... so your phone doesn't work. Ah.

I suspect that an 'enhancement' update might be released in a few days or weeks ...

And by the way, some basic maths.

iPod Touch, £200. Digital camera, £100. Mobile phone, £50. So that's 200 + 100 + 50 = 350.

iPhone, £600.

Where does the extra £250 come from?
